You know about hedge mazes and corn mazes, but have you ever been to a maze made of ice and snow ? Well they pop up form time to time around the world (always in the Winter months and in cold climates). Some of them are yearly installations while others we may never see again. Since it is December this is a good time to search for them on your local news !
Let’s take a look at some Ice and Snow Mazes:
Ice Palace Maze in Stillwater, Minnesota
This maze, located outside the Zephyr Theatre, was made of approximately 500,000 pounds of ice. It features ice sculptures, ice thrones for photo ops, and ice slides. Watching this maze be made on YouTube is great ! But, now you can find the maze in Eagan…
Minnesota Ice Maze at Viking Lakes, Eagan, Minnesota
This maze of ice is made by the Minnesota Ice company - “the nation's leading manufacturer of sculpture-grade ice and is the Midwest leader in artisan ice production.”. Made from over 1 million pounds of ice this maze can be found at 2645 Vikings Cir, Eagan, MN 55121. Great video showcasing the maze !
Snow Labyrinth in Zakopane, Poland
If someone asked you if you wanted to visit Snowlandia would you want to go ? I say yes, if just to check out this wonderful maze made of snow, the largest snow maze in the world, spread across 2,500 square meters.
Ice Maze at CityCenter in Washington, D.C.
This maze, located in CityCenterDC, was the largest clear ice maze in the United States at the time of its construction. Visitors could walk through it for free during a limited time.
At 37 acres large, this maze was created by Cory B Livingood. Located in Matanuska-Susitna, I hope this maze comes back again ! You can listen to information about this maze and it’s construction directly from Cory !
Copper Mountain Ski resort maze
Copper Mountain Ski resort is located in the White River National Forest, about 2 hours drive west of Denver. The Snice Snow & Ice Carvings team built the maze in nine days, using over 50,000 cubic feet of snow (that’s a lot of snow!). The final maze, with its 7-foot walls and carved artwork, is free to visitors of the ski resort. Located in East Village next to the Super Bee lift & Tubing Hill, you can find the maze rules and photos on the mazes webpage.
