Maze of the Week #43 - Castle Craig Maze

I said maze of the week #43 would be a castle, and it is sort of. More of a castle tower that is called a tower. The Castle Craig is located in Hubbard Park in Meriden, Connecticut and was dedicated on October 29, 1900. The castle is only 32 feet high, so taking the stairs to the observation deck is a short climb. You can check out the view in the video below, or read about the castle on the Wikipedia page.

The maze: I went with a basic black and white draw and cut construction. Honestly, if the castle was more famous I would colorize it, add to the background with some land, rock formations and a sky, and add some shadows to the castle.

Maze of the Week #42 - Sydney Opera House Maze

I made maze of the week #42 over a year ago and am proud to finally present it to you now. It features the iconic Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia. I would be surprised if you are not familiar with it because it is one of the most famous buildings in the world. The building, which sits on the banks of Sydney Harbour, was opened on the 20 of October 1973 (thus the maze launch this week).

Learn all about the Sydney Opera House.

I think you will enjoy this video tour of the building and it’s surroundings.

And you know what it looks like, but here is a photo anyway.

The maze:

Because of the details on the panels of the roof which I used to make the walls of the maze, this is one of the largest mazes on the website. It is formatted is print on 27x40 poster size paper. There is a large amount of white space and the maze looks even better with a true wide landscape format which cuts off the empty space.

I am considering a colorized version of the maze as a future project (on the to-do list).

Maze of the Week #41 - Don Carter Lanes Sign Maze

We have back-to-back bowling alley sign mazes as maze of the week #41 features a maze of the Don Carter Lanes sign in Rockford, Illinois. This week, however, I feature a bowling alley that is still open ! They have 42 lanes and an arcade so I know I would be happy spending a few hours there.

To learn about the bowling alley and plan a trip check out the website.

One of the things I like about their website is that their logo is a variation of the sign out front. I found a video that shows the bowling alley (and sign on a rainy night).

If you want to see a photo of the sign, this is a good one !

Maze of the Week #40 - Spillway Lanes Sign Maze

I am happy to present maze of the week #40, a maze of the Spillway Lanes sign in Springfield, Illinois. Or maybe I should more accurately say, the former bowling alley and former sign because when I look for information I can find the address….and there is no bowling alley or sign there anymore. The alley closed in 2007 and the sign came down sometime in the early 2010’s. But I found the sign online and loved it, so I made the maze anyway ! So there is not much else to say, or watch…

You can find a great black and white photo of the sign on flickr. Or 2 different color versions on roadarch.

The maze: I went with a color version because the sign was so colorful. I did muted, overcast weather colors, but I think it would also look good in bright colors. I do not know what maze bowling is but I imagine it is like miniature golf with obstacles ???
