Woman in the Maze (2023) Movie Review

Woman in the Maze (2023) IMDB AMZN

A woman works for a real estate company and takes a business trip to check out some locations in Jerome, Arizona. Jerome just happens to be America’s biggest ghost town. And the enormous old house she rented is haunted. That is the set-up for the movie. We also learn at some point that the house doesn’t want to let her leave, well except for the first few times she enters the house - then it seems to be perfectly fine. Why did the haunted house change it’s mind ? I have no idea. Did I consider going back to rewatch part of the movie to see if I missed something ? No. Do you go to the dentist for fun ? The only thing holding this movie back from awards is bad acting, a weak script with holes, a lack of scary scenes (there are some nice scary mirror scenes), and a bad ending. The poster is cool. So there’s that.

So, the house, when it finally traps our main character inside turns into a maze. Sadly, that just isn’t enough to save this movie. If you want to check out similar the house is a maze movies I suggest The Night House, Relic, Thir13een Ghosts, You Should Have Left or Grave Encounters if your prefer an asylum to a house.

I give it a 4.3/10.

Catacombs (2007) Movie Review

Catacombs (2007) IMDB AMZN

A woman visits her sister in Paris, because who wouldn’t want to visit Paris with a free place to stay and a tour guide ? Why visit the Eiffel Tower when you can can go underground to a secret rave in the catacombs of Paris surrounded with millions of skeletal remains ? I wouldn’t do that. But our characters do. I mean as you enter a sign reads “Arrête! C'est ici l'empire de la Mort”. Anyway, our character leaves the rave and gets lost in the maze that is the catacombs. And something sinister is after her. We have a lot of darkness, shaky camera, flickering lights, running, and screaming. And bones. Lots of bones. What we don’t have is a good horror movie. If you want to watch a good horror movie that takes place in the catacombs of Paris, choose As Above, So Below (2014).

I give it a 4/10.

The Gray Man (2022) Movie Review

The Gray Man (2022) IMDB

This Netflix original movie is considered a blockbuster as far as those things go. It is an action movie where our hero, named six (Ryan Gosling) is an operative for the CIA. This version of the CIA feels very Jason Bourne like with a cat and mouse game playing out between Six and Lloyd (Chris Evans) that drives the action. But it is a bit boring and I kept looking at my phone for random news. 2/3rds of the way through the movie we get a garden maze scene and a fight. I almost missed it since I was on my phone. Overall it is worth a look but don’t expect to love it.

I give it a 6.2/10.

Please Hold (2020) Movie Review

Please Hold (2020) movie poster

What drew me to this movie was the poster. Clearly there is a maze on the floor of the hallway the person is in and I wanted to see why. Well after watching this short film I understand. In a near future, drones do police work and prison is automated, run by a corporation. One day our main character is self-arrested by a drone and taken to prison. He does not know why and cannot find a human to speak to about his case. Things get very Black Mirror in this short, because everything you see happen is not far off from where we could be in a few years. This film has a great premise and is wonderfully made. I suggest you find it and watch it !

The maze ? Well that represents the bureaucracy of the situation.

I give it a 7.6/10.
