Maze of the Week #8 - Abraham Lincoln Maze

Happy President’s Day for those of you joining us from the United States. For the holiday we have maze fo the week #8, an Abraham Lincoln maze based on the statue in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. The maze is a draw and cut construction. It is large sized and in 2 colors.

Some information about Abraham Lincoln

Let’s just go right to the video:

Let’s take a look at a photo before we get to the maze !

The maze:

Includes the quote featured behind him in the memorial.

Coming next week:

Something a bit different - a tribute to a famous artist.

Maze of the Week #7 - Alabama Theatre Sign Maze

The 7th maze of the year features the Alabama Theatre Sign in Birmingham, Alabama. This is our third sign maze of the year. The maze construction is standard, I would also say this is the easiest of our mazes so far this year. After creating this sign (before adding the maze) I realized that the “open” space around the letters meant creating an easy maze or making very narrow pathways and a much harder maze. The band of lights that surround the sign also meant I needed to use an internal start and goal.

Some information about the Alabama Theatre

Originally opened the day after Christmas in 1927 as a movie theater, this historic theater was added to Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 15th, 1977. It includes a theater pipe organ nicknamed “Big Bertha” with 32 sets of pipes. They seem to have a busy schedule that you can find on their official website here.

This 7 minute video shows a nice interview with Cecil Whitmire and features Big Bertha !

Here is a photo of the sign before we get to the mazes.

The Mazes:

I made 2 versions of the maze. First the color version:

And then I re-colored the maze into greyscale. When I looked at the sign I kept thinking about old black and white movies and how it would look in them.

I hope you enjoy the mazes. You can find downloads of the maze at the mazes permanent home.

Coming next week:

A special maze for the President’s Day holiday in the United States.

Maze of the Week #6 - Blue Mustang Sculpture Maze

Our 6th maze of the year is a maze of “Blucifer” as some locals call it, or the Blue Mustang Sculpture that sits outside of Denver International Airport. This maze comes in 2 versions, color and a (mostly) black and white. The construction is free drawn. I am featuring the maze this week because it was completed on February 11, 2008.

Some information about the Blue Mustang Sculpture

This is a fiberglass sculpture from the artist Luis Jiménez. Unfortunately, it also led directly to his death. The sculpture is 32 feet high and weighs 9,000 pounds. The eyes are red LED lights. You can learn all about the sculpture on it’s Wikipedia page. I also highly suggest you check out this background story by Cameron Bailey.

Or you can just watch a 10 minute video about the horse:

Some pictures:

All three photos are provided courtesy of Denver International Airport. I included the restoration picture to give you an idea of the scale of the Mustang !

The Mazes:

The first version of maze is basically black and white except for the eyes. Nothing too difficult. The construction is free drawn.

And our second version shows off the blue color of the sculpture. Same maze as above, just re-colored.

Coming Next Week:

We return to the southern part of America with another sign maze.

Maze of the Week #5 - Sit and Spin Laundromat Sign Maze

Our 5th maze of the year is another sign from the state or Arkansas, this one from Fayetteville. This week I feature the Sit and Spin Laundromat Sign Maze. I really like the old timey look and simple colors of this sign. I would also like to say that as I was doing some research on the laundromat, they also have a great logo !

Some information about Sit and Spin Laundromat Sign

Well, it is a laundromat that is self service and open 24/7 just like all the best laundries are. It has free wi-fi which is one thing I love while I wait for my clothes to dry. Located at 737 N Leverett Ave Fayetteville, AR 72701 if you want to stop by. There is also a restaurant next door if you want to eat and spin instead of just sitting.

Here is it’s Facebook page where you can watch some videos…and learn about cleaning clothing.

The Sign:

Let’s take a look at a few pictures of the sign before we get to the maze, one from daytime and the other at night, each courtesy of the owner !

I would have never guessed that the ampersand lights up as purple at night. How beautiful !

The Maze:

Only in color for this one. A combination of a connected dots maze construction in the yellow sections with a regular circular construction in the white letters.
